“Subdivision Life” by Kelly Flynn

My house shakes in the wind
hastily assembled
civilization planted
out of season
in the middle of corn and soybeans

It is not organic
neighbors are so close
but so distant
we are consumed with
our own suffering and joy

Everyday our dogs bark
trying desperately to connect
an annoyance
to all within earshot
we scold and hush them

My house sits next to foreclosures
unloved and isolated
we are searching
for something more
but this is what we have found
